Hard work pays off for local award winning team

CORD excavations, a locally owned and operated civil
construction and plant hire business, was recently
awarded with the ACT Occupational Health and Safety
Excellence Award for 2005. The awards were a highlight
of ACT Workcover's "Opt for Safety" month, which
is aimed at increasing awareness of occupational
health and safety.
Cord Excavations was started by Nigel Forde and Greg
Corchrane in 1993 and concentrated primarily on plant
hire. The company gradually grew and moved its focus
to both civil contracting and plant hire. Over the
years the number of plant and vehicles has increased
dramatically as has the size of the workforce, which
now has numbers in excess of 20.
A major turning point for the company was achieving
third party certification of it's Quality Management
System in 2002 because it made management aware of
it's responsibilities. Federal Construction Management
(FCM) provided the foundations for the system which
included a standard health and safety plan that Cord
continues to refine to their specific industry. FCM
also continues to regularly audit the system to ensure
that compliance with Australian standards and legislation
is maintained.
